Spartan Europe to exclusively promote Oxley ETAG's
by supporting R & D with Development Kits.
Oxley e-tag is a field proven rugged automatic identification technology (AIT)
for equipment asset management applications where typically asset identification,
configuration, condition and history must always be available to the asset owners,
users, maintainers and supply chain in general. Assets with an e-tag device
fitted will always deliver off-line critical asset information co-resident with
the asset regardless of access to on-line information systems or geographic
location.
Oxley e-tags are miniature, rugged, contact memory devices containing up-to
128 k bytes of EEPROM non-volatile memory, equivalent to up-to 400 pages of
A4 text, housed in small metal cans. When interfaced to a reader via the probe,
an e-tag’s memory is manually read-from or written-to by simply touching the
hand-held Probe to the e-tag. When the probe is removed the data stored can
be retained for over 100 years. e-tags and probes are passive devices requiring
no battery or internal power source to retain data. e-tag devices contain a
number of functional features such as:
unique serial numbers for auto ID
on-chip password protection
memory write protection
error detection algorithms to minimise data corruption
These features enhance its basic read/write/store characteristics providing
data security and application flexibility to the user. In addition e-tag is
both straightforward to interface, by employing standard non-proprietary serial
and USB communications techniques, and straightforward to integrate using a
simple command set.
e-tag devices can be mechanically or adhesively attached to the asset. Adhesive
bonding is ideal for retrofit applications whereas mechanical attachment using
mounting holes is most appropriate for new build equipment where suitable mounting
arrangements can be provided during the design process. A third option is to
embed e-tags into metal ID labels increasing bonding strength and combining
visual and bar-code information.
e-tag devices have passed stringent environmental qualification tests to military
levels for emc, temperature, vibration, shock, humidity, mould growth and contamination
- proving beyond doubt their suitability to the most demanding applications.
Adhesive bond strengths to surfaces such as aluminium and paint have also been
successfully tested.
The probe is a hand held device used to make physical and electrical contact
with our e-tag and sensetag contact memory tags. It plugs into a controlling
computer to form the hardware element of an etag reader/writer.
Probes are compatible with RS232, COM and USB ports and are available with a
choice of connectors for compatibility with many desk-top, laptop and PDA computers.
The probe is completely passive, containing no batteries and derives its power
from the controlling computer. The probe makes contact with an e-tag and self
aligns in any orientation to make read/write contact. The two electrical contacts
are spring loaded and are designed to make over 10,000 actions. e-tag is tolerant
to breaks in contact during the reading and writing of tags. The system can
recognise when a probe contact is broken and will continue to re-try until probe
contact is re-established.
This robustness can be important and very practical under conditions of awkward
access. Oxley e-tag contact memory devices can also be through-hole panel mounted
into an asset to interface electrically to internal asset signals. These sensing
tags can be configured to automatically record equipment usage and sense environmental
exposure of powered host assets. The sensing tags typically log exceptions outside
the host equipments operating parameters.

Measured parameters can include running hours, events, temperature, vibration
and humidity. Sensing e-tags retain all the features of conventional e-tags
and are compatible and interoperable with the contact probe.
